Meet Dr. Mark Lawrence Johnson

Spearheaded by his direct representation of global pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies for almost 30 years (including commercial medicines, vaccine, and diagnostic devices), Dr. Mark Lawrence Johnson, head of MJ Lawrence Consulting, has earned significant recognition by the international medical countermeasures community (industry, governments, and institutions). His “hands on” experience spans across the business: from strategic planning, project management, commerical operations, marketing, sales, to government affairs.

Following traditional roles with leading pharmaceutical companies (Merck & Co, Eli Lilly, Astellas), Mark joined the biotechnology industry in 2007 to become one of the early pioneers in the European chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) medical countermeasures market and especially policy and procurement development. Hence, he has accrued a mature and extensive global network that expands throughout Europe, Asia, and the USA. Since 2011, he has had many of his articles published in renowned trade magazines and presses: CBRNe World, Cambridge University Press, Springer, Medical Corps International Forum (MCI Forum), and Security Europe TM (SecEUR Sprl).

Mark holds a BA in Business Management (University of Maryland), MBA (Wake Forest University), and a Doctorate in Economics (Université Paris-Panthéon-Assas) on a global public health policy topic: “International availability of medical countermeasures against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear agents”. While maintaining a US and European citizenship status, he is fluent in the English and German languages. In his free time, Mark is a jazz trumpet player and can be found playing live music in Munich, Germany.

Who We Are

With global reach from Munich, Germany, MJ Lawrence Consulting strengthens strategy and international business for medical products. We serve the needs of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, institutes, as well as governments. In addition to our expertise in diverse commercial markets, we also have extensive experience surrounding medical countermeasures (e.g. antidotes, vaccines, antivirals, and diagnostics) against rare, but deadly health threats such as those caused by chemical, biological, radiological & nuclear (CBRN) agents.

MJ Lawrence Consulting will strengthen the design and execution of your strategy and action plan to effectively achieve your international business objectives. This can include inspiring collaboration of private and public partnerships which becomes especially vital when the risk and cost for industry to provide medical countermeasures are not adequately balanced by market rewards that would normally incentivize product supply.

Core competencies are:

  • Business & Strategic Planning – Develop vision and focused action plan to drive effective and efficient progress (incl. market analysis, resource allocation, and portfolio analysis)
  • Implementation & Product Distribution – Project management and “hands on” field implementation of sales, marketing, and government affairs activities

  • Government Policy & Tender Shaping – Establish awareness of mutual interests between government, institutes, and industry (e.g. product/service specifications and standards)

  • Economic Analysis & Communication Research and determine product/service economic value messages to positively influence government policy and/or competitive advantage

Connecting Government & Industry

Maintaining a neutral and in-depth understanding of the interests of both industry and government is key to building trustworthy and fruitful partnerships. This is the prerequisite for inspiring and successfully achieving common objectives.

MJ Lawrence Consulting facilitates and leads cooperation based on its well-established experience working neutrally with industry as well as governmental and institutional officials.

  • Insider Industry Knowledge – Decades of experience gained through directly representing both global pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies

  • Global Health Policy Innovation – Global recognition earned through presenting directly to government officials, speaking at international events, as well as authoring economic & health security policy publications
  • Academically Esteemed – Professional merits are strengthened by academic achievements (BA, MBA, and Doctorate in economics – Global Public Health Policy)

  • Strong Global Network – Broadly networked across industry, public sectors (e.g. Ministries of Health, Military, Police, institutes) and trade organizations throughout Europe, USA, and Asia

“To overcome the restraints of supply and demand that lead to market failure; thus, lack of CBRN medical countermeasure availability, international cooperation strategies have the potential to reduce the risk and opportunity costs of associated political efforts and financial investments.

Providing situational analysis and strategies for defining a path to public health economic policy has been the key motivation of my research and corresponding articles”.
